Alcatraz Electric Vehicle Concept

This exclusive design was contrived for the San Francisco Motors Competition. The conception bears on the refined characteristics of aerodynamics, while maintaining the practicality of compactness. But the key innovation of this vitreous design is the ingenious incorporation of solar panels on the roof and hood of the car, in effect accentuating upon the total electricity produced, thereby extending the overall range of the vehicle.
Other than that, the car will also be equipped with six batteries, drawing up the car’s range to over 80 miles. Adding to the range’s protraction will be the car’s aerodynamically efficient design. For example – the front part will be reduced to nominal magnitude and the conventional grill will also be removed.
The under-body of the car will be kept fully flat, so as to increase the ground clearance and afford space for angles when climbing upon hills. From the perspective of capacity, this car could carry two people quite comfortably, along with adequate space for luggage

Mazda “crosswinds” concept car

Mazda will present an all-new show car at this year’s Moscow International Automobile Salon. The concept is a sporty, compact crossover SUV designed especially for the Russian market.
The Moscow show car is the latest concept to be developed using the new design direction called Nagare – following in the footsteps of Nagare, Ryuga, Hakaze, Taiki and Furai.

Nagare, which means “flow” in Japanese, represents a new approach to expressing movement in car design, taking as inspiration the flow patterns of natural elements, such as the wind. The design theme of Mazda’s concept for the 2008 Moscow motor show is “crosswinds”.
Russia is one of Europe’s fastest-growing markets and is rapidly becoming the region’s largest automobile market. SUVs are particularly popular in Russia, with a segment share of about 20 percent. Mazda’s latest concept car is designed to appeal particularly to younger SUV owners who have a strong sense of style.

The Moscow show car, the name of which will be announced in due course, again showcases the depth of creativity within Mazda design. In February 2008, the Mazda Design team received the coveted Grand Prix du Design at the Festival Automobile International in Paris.

The Moscow International Automobile Salon media days are on August 26 and 27, whereas 28 August caters for industry and trade specialists. The show is open to the public from 29 August through 7 September.

The new show car will be unveiled at the Mazda press conference at 10:15 on August 26 at the Mazda stand.

Future V-Twin Motorcycle Design – Saurabi F1200

There's a wealth of motorcycle design talent out there with great ideas and here's another, this one by designer Jon Pugh. It's what he calls the Saurabi F1200, powered by a Harley Davidson 1200cc V-Twin. The seat has a range of adjustment up and down to accommodate riders of many sizes, including women who usually have shorter stature than the average male and often have trouble fitting on the standard bikes offered for sale. In fact, one of the ideas behind this design was specifically to make the same kind of motorcycle available to women who are not looking for a "women's bike," they just want a motorcycle.

This design, like the NERO we featured here, was a senior design thesis project. Interesting work, to be sure and a good sign the new guys coming up have enough fresh ideas to keep our showrooms interesting for many years to come.

Recumbent Motorcycle at Znug Design

This recumbent motorcycle looks like it has been strongly influenced by the Japanese movie Akira. These renderings are very cool but since I do not read Japanese I can't tell you anything about it. From the looks of it, it appears to be powered by an electric motor, which could be the cylindrical object behind the front wheel, there are also no obvious exhaust pipes anywhere.

If any of our Japanese readers or anyone else who can read Japanese cares to elaborate on the writings from the site, please do.

If someone designs and builds a functional electric motorcycle like this, I'm in.

Thanks to Bob Horn for the tip!

The 2011 Ferrari Enzo

Considered by many enthusiasts as the ultimate modern Ferrari, the limited-edition Enzo’s replacement will be a tough act to follow up for the Italian automaker. The second-generation Enzo, also named after the marque’s illustrious founder, promises to take performance – and, surprisingly, efficiency – to a new level. Like the original Enzo, the car’s successor will be a range-topping supercar aimed at immortalizing the legendary founder of the brand. Available only to select current Ferrari owners, the next-generation Enzo will serve as the brand’s performance and technology showcase.

Based – at least in concept – on the Ferrari Millechili show car (though the production Enzo replacement won’t carry that name), the performance car will be loaded with the technology learned from years of Formula 1 experience.
Expected to be powered by a mid-mounted V8 engine, rather than the Maserati-based V12 that motivated the Enzo, power should easily exceed 700 horsepower. Though fuel efficiency is hardly a Ferrari selling point, the car must conform to more recent European Union standards, meaning a new emphasis has been placed on reducing consumption. It has been rumored that Ferrari will use twin-turbocharging to make the most out of a smaller-displacement (think under 6 liters) V8 engine.

Key to addressing the fuel economy issue is a significant weight and size reduction, which should bring the car well down from the just-over 3,000 lbs. of its predecessor; rumors out of Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters indicate that weight could approach 2,200 lbs. Improved aerodynamics, including adjustable front and rear spoilers, will not only help the new Enzo stick to the road at maximum speeds, but it will also ensure reduced fuel consumption. Its platform could go one of two ways: Either a heavily-modified version of the FXX race car’s architecture – itself a variation of the road-going Enzo – or a slightly longer derivative of the F430?s aluminum space frame. Production will probably be at least as limited as the original Enzo, meaning no more than 400 of the 1 million Euro-plus supercars will emerge from Maranello when it goes on sale in over a year’s time.
